01 / The winged ant
The flying silhouette stays legible through the body, antennae, and parallel wing shapes.
Chikatana / Chicago
A flying ant became the center of Chikatana’s identity: a distinctive mark that could stand alone, sit with the name, and carry through menus, print, and two very different website directions.

Chikatana / Identity
A story
with wings.
The character is in the flight. The mark needed to feel like an ant with wings, even as its lines were reduced into a clear, recognizable symbol.
The restaurant’s story drew on the chicatana, a Mexican flying ant associated with culinary tradition, seasonal migration, and resilience. It gave the identity a clear idea to return to as the drawing evolved.
For a playful Mexican cantina in Chicago’s Fulton Market, the idea connected a distinctive creature with regional food traditions and a seasonal Midwestern point of view.
Finding
the ant.
The exploration moved between a complete insect silhouette and a more reduced symbol. Each direction was considered both alongside the wordmark and on its own.
Wings, body, antennae, and open space were the variables. The three directions show how much could change while keeping the drawing concise.
The flying silhouette stays legible through the body, antennae, and parallel wing shapes.
The creature is reduced to an open hexagonal form and a suggestion of antennae.
Filled geometric segments give the insect a more literal, grounded silhouette.
The direction that carried through
The winged direction kept the story clearest. Its wings give it character; the open geometry gives the mark room to breathe.
Choosing the right variant
Outlined and filled. With and without a letter inside the body. The different treatments gave the ant flexibility, while the unlettered version let the symbol speak for itself.
Use was part of the design from the start: a small browser icon, a menu cover, or a quiet detail on a card. The ant needed to hold together in each setting.
Beyond the wordmark
Used alone, the ant gives a piece its identity without repeating the name. Paired with the wordmark, it becomes a compact signature. That relationship carries through the materials.
The flying ant
From a mark
to a system.
The ant works independently of the name. Paired with the widely spaced wordmark, it becomes a compact identity; enlarged, its geometry becomes the focus.
Charcoal, soft grays, and warm white keep the supporting palette quiet. Narrow headings and clear descriptions organize the information, while the original gold artwork provides the accent.
Palette
A quiet range of supporting neutrals.
The identity
at work.
The menu is where the identity has to be useful. Clear sections, room around each dish, and a consistent price column let the food come first.
The refined presentation gives the menu a calmer rhythm, then carries the same restraint into a paired card composition and simple stationery.
Two expressions.
One identity.
One direction is bright, divided, and editorial. The other is immersive and photographic. Both keep the original Chikatana identity, with the website providing a different atmosphere around it.
Two portfolio demonstrations bring those directions into focus, each with its own homepage, story, and menu experience.
Website direction 01
A split composition gives the food its own side of the screen. A slim dividing rail and an open white panel bring a more conversational pace to the restaurant story.

Full-screen restaurant photography, the centered ant and wordmark, and a black-and-gold frame make the identity feel more immersive.
